Once a thick-headed, fast-tailed, big-city dreaming teenager, Louisa moved to New Orleans where she clawed her way to her position as a millionaire madam. She made many sacrifices for this title, including abandoning her role as a mother. Back alleys, betrayals and bribery were all pieces of her puzzle. Everything comes with a price. That was her first lesson learned. Even money costs, and the price that Louisa paid for her wealth keeps her up most nights. When she returns home to visit her dying mother, she’s reminded of everyone she’s wronged, including her neglected daughters. Losing her mother urges her to make peace with her past, but making money is easy; coming clean isn't. Can she face her fears and clear her conscience, or will she return to the ever-secretive underworld?

“Pimping ain’t easy, but it’s necessary.”

A cliché line and quote, but oh so true for Louisa. Getting Across is a tale of a woman abused. From this abuse, she starts on a journey of bad habits and bad patterns, while dragging five innocent children along on her rollercoaster. Louisa has a dream to escape the red dirt of Coushatta, Louisiana and step out of the shadow of her twin sister, the favorite of her mother. From day one, she takes on the wrong allies, befriending a “fast” young woman named Girly and falling for the town’s playboy Trouble Man (Walter). Girly introduces Louisa to smoking and charging men for sex. Walter comes along like a savior, but ultimately makes her dream of crossing the tracks a nightmare. Louisa is forced to do what she has to in order to survive. Eventually, her body becomes her main source of income. As time moves along, more women, who find using what they have in order to get what they want and need profitable, join her. She becomes a million dollar Madame and the rest is history.

I had a love/hate relationship with the main character. I thoroughly understood why she was the way that she was, but I hated that she never truly learned her lesson. I hated that she didn’t take more consideration into the role she was playing for her children. She completely abandoned them. She was selfish and she knew that.

Hating the character of this book is what makes me love this author. The pages were magnetic from Deacon Russell’s sickening violation, on back around to the stuttering Eugene. Of the many men that paraded in and out of this fiction tale, Clarence McPherson stood out to me the most. I really wanted something between he and Louisa to manifest deeper. They shared a scene in his office that made me feel as thought I was right there with them. Their “relationship” was uncomplicated and she learned lot from him. I feel had the times been different, we would have been reading a different story. He was the one I felt the most chemistry with when it came to emotions and Louisa.

Duncan executed this story well: great theme, great writing, and great plot, just all around greatness. I’m looking forward to the release of “Getting Over” to see what happens to those five girls. I definitely recommend this book.

Enjoyed this book.
Kept me on the edge of my seat from open to close. The end, well I just know a sequel is on the horizon!!! And I can't wait!!
Loved this book very entertaining
I really got into this book. I so much enjoyed the time setting and the whole life of this women. I'm hoping there is a book two in the making..
A refreshing break from my usual read. I feel it shows what happens when nobody breaks the generational curse. You end up with generations of women not knowing how to love themselves and their children. Good read.
I enjoyed the beginning of this book! I was so excited to get to the conclusion and when I got there I was very disappointed! ( Everything I felt, didn't feel resolved to me. I want to know what happened to all of the characters. You take all this time reading and getting to know the characters but then the book just ends so you're left with all of these questions. I thought it was a great read though, you'll just have to make up your own happy ending.
Getting Across is a wonderful book. It's like eating really good dark chocolate; you know 1 piece is enough but you have 2 then look back and the whole box is gone. T. M. Duncan I'm hoping there's another book in the works very soon.
